The essay was kind of spoiled for me, though, by the ending, in which Zimmer seems to buy into something he calls the “extended evolutionary synthesis”. I managed to snag a copy of Evolution—The Extended Synthesis[1] from the University science library. In real life, the meeting discussed the possibilities for an “Extended Synthesis” in evolutionary biology which incorporates development, evolvability, complexity theory, etc. Sunday, February 17, 2013: 8:30 AM-11:30 AM. Clark Barrett wrote an extended, critical review of Buller's 2005 book in the journal Philosophy of Science. However, long after the automobile had made the horse and carriage obsolete and the association had faded, the concepts of each still defined one another; this synthesis is still present today. At the very least, then, taking an evolutionary perspective should include things like Mendelian inheritance, mutation and population genetics. The automobile developed out of, and in opposition to, Early automobiles extended and adapted the accustomed 19th century understanding of locomotion. However, are you sure that we really need to get rid of the term 'randomness' in favor of 'evolutionary chance', as the authors of the article propose? Do We Need an Extended Evolutionary Synthesis?
